About ToolSite

Accurate fabric yardage estimates for quilters, home sewers, and upholstery professionals — built by people who sew.

Who We Are

ToolSite was built by a team of sewing enthusiasts and home décor specialists who got tired of the guesswork at the fabric counter. We've all experienced the frustration of coming home short on yardage for a curtain project, or buying double what we needed for a simple quilt backing.

Our team has combined experience across quilting, dressmaking, home décor sewing, and upholstery. We understand the real-world math that drives fabric purchases — fullness ratios, pattern repeat alignment, the difference between finished and cut dimensions, and how bolt width changes everything. We built this calculator to handle all of it correctly, every time.

Our fabric yardage formula follows the same methodology used by professional workrooms and recommended by major fabric retailers including Joann Fabrics, Mood Fabrics, and the Singer Sewing resource library. We cite every standard we use. If something is wrong, we want to know — which is why our contact email is on every page.

Built for Real Projects

Every calculation handles the details that trip people up: pattern repeats, fullness ratios, seam and hem allowances, and fabric bolt width variations. We don't give you a rough estimate — we give you the right number.

Accuracy You Can Trust

Our formulas are verified against industry standards and tested against real cutting outcomes. We update our calculators when we find discrepancies, and we document every change.

Education, Not Just Numbers

Our blog covers the why behind the calculations — how fullness ratios work, when to pre-wash, how to budget for a sewing project. The calculator gives you a number; our guides help you understand it.

Our Calculation Methodology

The fabric yardage formula used on this site calculates: (1) the cut length per panel by adding seam and hem allowances to the finished length, rounding up to the nearest pattern repeat; (2) the number of width panels needed to span the finished width at the specified fullness ratio; (3) total yardage by multiplying cut length by panel count and dividing by 36.

This is the standard method used by professional workrooms across residential and commercial applications. It's the same math a professional upholsterer uses, the same approach quilting pattern designers rely on, and the same method professional drapery workrooms have used for decades.

Pattern repeat alignment: each panel rounds up to the nearest full repeat
Fullness ratios for curtains: 1x flat through 2.5x luxury pleats
Separate seam and hem allowances for accurate cut-length calculation
All five standard bolt widths: 36", 44/45", 54", 60", and 108"
Waste estimate based on actual cutting layout, not a flat percentage

Who Uses Fabric Calculator?

Home sewers calculating yardage for curtains, quilts, clothing, tablecloths, and upholstery. Quilters buying backing fabric and binding for their next project. Interior designers specifying fabric orders for client window treatments. Upholstery DIYers measuring for dining chairs and sofas. Anyone buying fabric online who can't hold the bolt to estimate visually.

Our sewing guides cover everything from curtain fullness ratios to fabric shrinkage percentages to upholstery yardage estimates. The fabric calculator is free to use without registration, and always will be.
